Saquarema is a city known outside Brazil mainly by surfers. During the time of the Empire, Saquarema was in the hands of a conservative elite, who employed a slave labor force in its huge coffee fazendas. Today, it has the atmosphere of a popular seaside resort. Beaches and lagoons are the main interests of the place. You can surf and have a drink on the beach in Itaunà, fish in Jaconé, and admire the nature in Massambaba. In the lagoon of Saquarema you can go windsurfing, you can walk in the mangroves in the lagoon of Jaconè. There are still some monuments to see.
