Cabo Frio is the big seaside town of the Costa do Sol. At first sight, Cabo Frio is not very attractive: high buildings, streets often in a bazaar...but the geography of the city is to be underlined: a white sand beach as far as the eye can see, on which the old fort São Matheus was built in the 17th century by the Portuguese. A canal wraps around the back of the city to a gigantic lagoon that extends to Araruama. The city has a small historical district, the Passagem, with low and coloured houses which border a small fishing port. Brazilians flock here with their families on weekends and holidays.
