Church perched on a rock, celebrated with jubilation every September 8

This is a far cry from the modern and pure lines of Niemeyer's drawings from Brasilia or Niteroi. Built in 1837, the city's main church, Igreja Nossa Senhora de Nazareth, perched on a rock overlooking the sea, is well worth a visit. The small cemetery at the back has a beautiful view. It is said that Afro-Brazilian demonstrations take place there at night... Every September 8th, the church is the object of a great celebration, which is accompanied by popular jubilation.
