Located 85 km from Rio de Janeiro, Mangaratiba is best known for its luxury resorts, notably Club Med Rio das Pedras Resort. The town of around 40,000 inhabitants is of little interest in itself, except for those who want to get to Ilha Grande without passing through Angra dos Reis. If you leave from Rio, you'll save an hour's bus journey compared with the port of Angra, but the shuttles are much less frequent. Nonetheless, Mangaratiba boasts beautiful beaches, mountains (Serra do Piloto), waterfalls, historic buildings dating back to colonial Brazil, a few museums and centuries-old churches.
