Amlapura, formerly known as Karangasem, is the capital of the province of the same name. Its name was changed after the devastating eruption of Gunung Agung in 1963, to compensate for certain superstitions. Historically, this kingdom gained autonomy in the late 17th century, gradually becoming one of Bali's most influential. With its extensive control over Lombok and East Bali, Karangasem played a key role in Balinese politics, despite its failure to conquer Klungkung.Today, Amlapura is a quiet town, home to several royal palaces. The Puri Kanginan (or Puri Agung), is the only one open to the public, offering a fascinating insight into the region's royal history. Another point of interest in Amlapura is its lively morning market, frequented by East Bali locals.
