Staufen, at the foot of the Black Forest Mountains, is both a cultural and historic city. Its small town centre is very charming and has preserved its moyenageux charm, including its market square and the ruins of the old castle. If it should not be mentioned that a character from Staufen, it would probably be Johann Faust, who is more known as a doctor Faust. He was probably born in Staufen in 1480, and became a travelling and experienced magician, and then joined the Lord Anton de Staufen as an alchemist to make the king of all metals - gold - and thus pay the city's debts. In 1539, he died in a chamber of Hotel Löwen, on the Market Square, a plaque reminiscent of the event. Legend tells us that he would have reached an agreement with the devil; a certain Mephisto. This legend was taken up by Goethe in his two plays, Faust I and Faust II.
