For a long time, this township remained sparsely populated because of its mountainous terrain, which did not make it easy for the farmers of the time. American Loyalists first came and founded the village of Cherry River, which is now the centre of the village of Orford. Mount Orford is located on its territory. The creation of Mount Orford National Park in 1938, followed by the opening of the ski resort and golf club, made Orford a four-season resort destination. It is also home to a highly regarded classical music academy, Orford Musique (summer music festival).
