The village of Ayer's Cliff offers privileged access to Lake Massawippi. Its name is inspired both by the cliff overlooking the southern end of the lake and by Thomas Ayer, the instigator of the railroad in the region. In the late 18th century, the first settlers moved here. The place was then known as Langmaid's Flat, a certain Mr. Langmaid having opened a small hotel for stagecoach passengers there. The village has retained its Anglo-Saxon charm, with its old houses and bandstand. There's a market every Saturday in summer and the Stanstead County Agricultural Fair (August), one of the oldest in Quebec.
