In the heart of a rich agricultural region, this small, quiet capital city (population about 39,000) with its classic Victorian houses lives quietly as a medium-sized port in a well-sheltered cove of the Northumberland Strait. Founded in 1768, it was named after Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III of England. As the birthplace of Canadian Confederation, the city celebrated in 2014 the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference, which was the prelude to Confederation in 1867. The terraces on Victoria Row, which is closed to traffic, and the harbour area are very lively. A very pleasant little town!
