The cape is composed of two islands (central Trenholm Island and outer Jourimain Island), which are surrounded by brackish, highly saline marshes that connect them to the land. Beginning in 1896, the main island of Jourimain was the mainland terminal for icebreaking ships travelling between New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. A major road was built in the 1960s to connect the islands to the mainland. It is now the main access route to the famous Confederation Bridge. The Cape contains an important reserve of approximately 170 species of native and migratory birds.
