Castro is the capital of the island of Chiloé. In February 1567, Martín Ruiz de Gamboa arrived on the banks of the Gamboa River and founded the city of Castro, the southernmost city in South America in the 16th century. He named it in honour of the viceroy of Peru, Lopez Garcia de Castro. Until the beginning of the 19th century, the history of the village will be marked by tidal waves, pirate attacks and earthquakes. Today, it is the most dynamic city of the archipelago. Some consider it too touristy to really reflect the essence of Chiloé. Nevertheless, it is still pleasant to linger a few days there, especially since its location is ideal to reach other remarkable sites of the island in one day.
