There is a penguin colony in Chiloé. Declared a Natural Monument, this reserve is a privileged breeding place for a mixed colony of penguins: it is one of the few places in Chile where two species of penguins, the Magellanic and the Humboldt penguins, live side by side and are on the verge of extinction. There are also sea birds and even otters (nutrias de mar, also called chungungos here). The best time to admire them is from November to March, with January and February being the best months. You will also be able to eat in the premises located on the beach. Most of the agencies in the area will offer you the visit, but it is possible to go on your own.
