The large port of Puerto Montt, with about 225,000 inhabitants and capital of the Lakes Region, is located in a natural cirque facing the ocean. The city is an essential stopover, either before heading south or to reconnect with regions with a more welcoming climate and infrastructure. As the poet Benjamin Subercaseaux poetically wrote, Puerto Montt is like a "trampoline that throws those who come sliding down the central valley's toboggan and throws them, frightened, into the labyrinth of canals". However, chandeliers away from the peaceful daily life of the surrounding villages, the rapid and uncontrolled urban growth of recent years does not make this city an indispensable stopover.
