With a population of some 70,000 inhabitants, the ancient fishing port is today a seaside town whose medina (old town), listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, spreads out, as in Saint-Malo, on an isthmus running towards the ocean. Essaouira is certainly one of the most pleasant cities in Morocco, for its human dimensions, its mild climate all year round, but also for its authenticity, which can sometimes be lacking in other major tourist cities of the country such as Marrakech, Tangier or Casablanca. The Essaouira tourist guide will allow the traveller to make the most of his stay under the Atlantic trade winds. The kingdom, since the accession of His Majesty Mohammed VI to the head of the country, is determined to develop tourism, a cultural and high-end tourism. The great hotels are constantly flourishing. The same goes for restaurants, a category in which you can find both European addresses and elegant Moroccan tables, not to mention the port and its fish specialists, where Orson Welles himself used to crawl around a plate of sardines. But Essaouira is also a very poetic city: the warm lights as much as the light blue colours of the windows mixed with the ochre that passes through the ramparts provoke emotion. Finally, it should be noted that the fine sandy beaches around the city are constantly exposed to strong winds, creating ideal conditions for surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing. Let yourself be tempted by this ideal destination.

When to go to Essaouira?

When to go to Essaouira? On the Moroccan Atlantic coast, the high season is summer, from mid-June to mid-September: foreign tourists and Moroccan city dwellers come to enjoy the sea and the freshness of the sea spray. For economic and tranquility reasons, the best time to go to Essaouria is certainly the low season. At that time, hotels granted discounts of up to 50%. Negative point however, some services and animations can be deleted. Also pay attention to the Ramadan period, when the country is living in slow motion and eating becomes complicated. This sacred month for Muslims advances by about ten days each year. In the end, the answer to the question of when to go to Essaouira is all year round, trying to target the spring and autumn months if possible. Finally, it should be noted that the Gnaoua music festival attracts a crazy crowd to Essaouira every year towards the end of June

How to go to Essaouira? Our advice & tips

  • Organised trips
  • Going alone
  • Moving around

Morocco is a very touristic destination, and the phenomenon is increasing. The specialists are therefore quite numerous and, knowing the terrain perfectly, will be able to organise a tailor-made trip for you. You can also choose a thematic tour: Moroccan culture and cuisine, water sports, and even combine them. As there are many offers at certain times, it may be more interesting to go through an agency than to organize your own trip.

It is quite possible to prepare a trip to Essaouira by yourself. When departing from France, the fares for a round trip air ticket can vary enormously depending on the season, the airline used, and the booking time: from 150 to 450 €. As far as accommodation is concerned, Essaouira has everything you need: from small inexpensive hostels to luxury hotels, not to mention comfortable, inexpensive pensions. The same goes for food.

If you land in Casablanca or Marrakech, you will travel to Essaouira by bus. Once there, the medina is accessible on foot and the various points of interest outside the city centre can also be reached easily on foot. For more remote areas, we will use the bus, the microtaxi, or we will rent a vehicle (two-wheelers or car), while remaining on our guard: driving in Morocco is quite sporty!
