Alcantarilha, whose name, like other localities, is taken from Arabic, means bridge (Al-Kantar). This charming little village is close to famous beaches of the region, such as those of Carvalho or Praia da Marinha, considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal and Europe. If you don't have time to visit the Capela dos Ossos (or Chapel of the Bones) in Faro, don't miss the one in Alcantarilha. The interior is a singular and intriguing decor of bones and skulls of more than 1,500 worshippers. The chapel was built in the 16th century and the bones that line its interior probably come from an old cemetery
