Famous for its earthenware factory, its embroidered fabrics and its thermal baths, the city is also famous for its "Zé-Povinho", a caricature of Pinheiro representing the little people. This arm of honour is declined in many forms and variations in the old town. Caldas da Rainha owes its existence and name to Queen Leonor, who noticed people bathing in sulphurous water to cure their rheumatism. She decided to do the same, and immediately verified the beneficial effects. In 1485, she sold all her assets to build a hospital, then had a park laid out and a church built.
