Small in size, but truly enchanting! Praia das Maçãs, "the apple beach", is a beautiful cove surrounded by rocks carved with tiny cells, against which the sea crashes at high tide, creating a haunting soundtrack. The beach's name is said to derive from the apples that used to wash up here, brought by the river Colares. Just before Praia das Maçãs, the Praia Grande seafront is ideal for a drink while meditating or surfing. The cliffs are lined with footpaths offering sumptuous panoramas. The long shoreline is served by a picturesque tramway which, from Sintra, winds its way through the valley.
