9 kilometers west of Caldas da Rainha on the N360. In season, buses leave every hour from Caldas, weekdays only (not Sundays). Foz do Arelho, a powerful ancient village amidst rice fields on the banks of the Rio Mondego, is dominated by a 9th-century castle. The church of Santa Maria de Alcáçova, of Romanesque and Manueline origin, features magnificent azulejos dating back to Moorish times. The village was the birthplace of Fernão Mendes Pinto, a 16th-century explorer and writer. People also come here for its beach, right next to the Óbidos lagoon. Activities for all: water sports, walking and lounging.
