Its castle and 12th-century crenellated wall surrounding the old town is one of Portugal's 7 wonders. From afar, you can already make out an impressive ring of ramparts surrounding the Castelo keep and a small gem of an intramural village. A jewel of a town, perfectly maintained and preserved. A collection of doll's houses in a labyrinth of staircases and cobbled streets evoking Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. This city of queens (systematic dowry of all the queens of Portugal between 1282 and 1834) is a living museum, which comes alive in July with its "medieval market". Very touristy, but well worth the detour.
