Rio Maior is located in the heart of the "Estremadura ribatejana", a way of recalling that the city, nestled at the foot of the Serras D'Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park, receives influences from the coast and the ancient region of Ribatejo. The Maior River gave its name to the county and to the city, which for centuries was a very important mining center: rock salt was (and still is!) exploited from the vast mine of Salinas da Fonte da Bica. Agricultural activity predominates: vineyards and orchards mark the landscape.
