In the 12th century, Breda was one of the main strongholds of the country. It is now a charming town in the south of the country at the confluence of the Mark and the Aa. The name Breda is explained by the contraction of Brede (wide in Dutch) and Aa. The strategic position of Breda, at the confluence of the two rivers, has always been a source of envy and the city has been repeatedly besieged, occupied and sometimes even destroyed. It is a garrison town (several barracks and a military school make it an important place for the Dutch army), dynamic and commercial with about 181,000 inhabitants, with pleasant cafés and many stores. It is best to get around by bike or on foot.
