The Lady in question was none other than the wife of British Governor Harry Smith. In 1847, a few years before the British named the area, a small group of hardy farmers had formed the independent Republic of Klip River here, under the supreme command of Andries Spies. Ladysmith was under siege from November 1899 to February 1900 and made the headlines in the London press during the Anglo-Boer War. A large Indian community lives in Ladysmith, where the memory of Gandhi is cultivated. The town boasts the most famous vocal group in South Africa, Joseph Shabalala's Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
