Having launched an appeal for help, the Boers saw volunteers arrive from all over the country and from all nationalities. A troop of 800 men assembled on 22 May 1884 at a place called Zallflaager proclaimed Dinizulu king of the Zulus. In August, the sovereign offered the promised land to the volunteers. The town of Vryheid was created in September 1884. A president was appointed, Lucas Johannes Meyer. Four years later, the New Republic joined the Transvaal. In 1903, the region became part of Natal. Military history enthusiasts will find their happiness in the area around Vryheid, with the battlefields of the Anglo-Zulu and Anglo-Boer conflicts.
