The large family of Newcastle (twenty-five cities worldwide) has a South African parent, located just over 1 000 metres above sea level, not far from the Drakensberg summits. The city, founded in 1864, bears the name of the Duke of Newcastle, the British Secretary to the colonies. More than 5 000 British came to settle there in the 1870 s, before the trouble with the Zulu. At that time Newcastle was a postal relay, halfway between Pretoria and Port-Natal. The region today produces coal and steel.
