Thomas Smith had spent five years searching for gold in Australia before settling here in 1855, naming his farm after his town in Scotland. His brother Peter joined him in 1864 and made his fortune by discovering the coal that earned the town its nickname of "Coalopolis". Another Scottish soldier also played a major role in Dundee's early years. In 1896, he sold plots of land to Indian families: today, you can find excellent samoussas. Rest assured, with an estimated 2,700 million tonnes of untapped coal reserves, Dundee does not look like a mining centre.
