Around 140 km north of Durban, Balgowan was originally a train station and small supermarket on the Battlefields road. Numerous Gothic-style buildings are reminiscent of the nearby colonial town of Pietermaritzburg, including a pretty little chapel. Today, Balgowan is surrounded by pine and eucalyptus forests, which are the mainstay of the forestry operations run by the surrounding farmers. Be sure to take the R103 Midlands Meander scenic route to enjoy the splendid scenery. Here you'll find numerous craft stalls, restaurants and hotels.
