Situated in the foothills of the impressive and beautiful Drakensberg Mountains at an altitude of 1400m, Mooi River overlooks the fertile valleys of the Battlefields and the Midlands. This location gives it a beautiful unobstructed view of the KwaZulu-Natal region. Originally named Lawrenceville on Grantleigh Farm when the railway line was built in the late 19th century, the town was renamed in 1961 when it achieved full town status. Today, the small railway station remains. Mooi River is Afrikaans for "pretty river"
