The ancient Calagurris was one of the most important cities of the Roman Empire in Spain. It was an episcopal see from the 4th century, which allowed it to have a great influence on its diocese for several centuries. Its historic center is a mixture of medieval, baroque, neo-Mudejar and Art Nouveau styles. With 25,000 inhabitants, it is the second largest city in La Rioja. Calahorra is known for its celebrations during the Holy Week, the "Semana Santa calagurritana", a festival of national tourist interest. On this occasion, a huge Roman market - the Mercaforum - immerses the visitor in the glorious era of Calagurris.
