The wine capital of Burgos, this city of over 32,600 inhabitants is built on a veritable labyrinth of cellars 7 km long. It is believed that the Romans used to store grapes in these cellars to make wine. The best way to get to know this subterranean world is to visit the Plaza Mayor at the CIAVIN (Centre for the Interpretation of Architecture Associated with Wine). This is an opportunity to get to know these wines, which are of the same high quality as those from Rioja. Aranda de Duero also has an interesting architectural heritage, including the Gothic church of Santa María, the church of San Juan and its Museum of Sacred Art, the Palacio de los Berdugo and the well-preserved medieval bridge of las Tenerías, which offers beautiful views of the river Bañuelos. As for underground wineries , there were 135 of them, totalling 7 km. Nowadays, some of them can be visited, ask at the tourist office. The speciality of the place is the lechazo (suckling lamb), which can be found on every restaurant menu. There are also many bodegas to eat in.
