Halfway between Kastelli-Kissamos and Hania, the big rural village of Voukolies has no particular cachet: one just crosses it without stopping. But a stop at the central square where there is a periptero, in one of the kafeneia, allows to appreciate the life of the village at certain hours of the day. A market is held there every Saturday since the Turkish occupation. The water of the Nebra fountain is said to be curative for stomach aches. Then the road climbs and winds through the hills with changing landscapes passing through the villages of Dromoneros, Mesavlia and Floria from where you can discover the lush valley of Sassalos or the gorge of Mesavlia.
