Located about ten kilometers southwest of Agios Nikolaos, at an altitude of 600 meters, Kritsa has become one of the favorite destinations of tour operators. The place is particularly photogenic with its terraced houses built on the hillside, colorful stores selling handicrafts (mainly weavings, embroideries, leathers at prices a little lower than Agios Nikolaos), old Greeks at the terrace of the cafes (some dressed in the traditional way) and a relaxed Cretan atmosphere if you manage to avoid the times when the buses disembark.A narrow street crosses the village where most of the stores are located. There are two parking lots: one at the bottom of the village, the other at the top. A post office is located in the lower part, as well as an ATM. The rest consists of small cafes, a few taverns and stores selling embroidered tablecloths and other handicrafts. Despite the presence of organized groups, Kritsa retains its charm and is a good place to stay, if you are looking to avoid Agios Nikolaos. The surrounding nature is a good reason to stay. The Kritsa Gorge, just outside the village, is a spectacular 4 km long and sometimes only 1.5 m wide. Otherwise, the village is a pleasant and rich day trip with sites that are worth a visit. KTEL buses run regularly to/from Agios Nikolaos from 7am to 8pm.
