The bay between Hersonissos and Malia is the busiest in all Crete. However, Malia, unlike Hersonissos, has a history embodied by the ruins of the Minoan palace, one of the three great palaces of Crete along with Knossos and Phaestos. In the same way, the old (pedestrian) town has retained some of its charm. The new town is no different from Hersonissos: in summer it is a destination especially appreciated by tourists from Northern Europe. Nevertheless, Malia has many of the most beautiful beaches in the country! They are located in Potamos, near the archaeological site. Malia is one of the oldest man-made places in Crete. Indeed, since the Neolithic period (from 6000 BC), communities have settled there. Ruins of prehistoric (3000 BC) and then pre-palatial (2500 BC) houses were found under the Minoan palace of Malia, the first constructions of which date back to 2000 BC.
