Elounda is located 10 km north of Agios Nikolaos, facing the peninsula of Spinalonga to which it is connected by a small bridge. It is a chic resort, which attracts celebrities and international conferences, and has some of the most expensive hotel units in Greece. However, there is no sense of outrageous snobbery, and the little port retains an obvious charm. The origin of its name is pre-Hellenic and the ancient Olonda (Olous) was built on the isthmus that connects the present Elounda to the peninsula. Olous was the port of Lato. It was submerged by an earthquake and is now under water. The town stretches out at the bottom of the gulf, with a central square overlooking the small fishing port. There are travel agencies that offer boat trips to the island of Spinalonga. Just before arriving from Agios Nikolaos, on the right, there are the remains of the salt production facilities built by the Venetians.
