Vaï is an unmistakable feature of the island, present in all the tourist brochures. It is a real oasis 30 kilometres east of Sitia. The largest and probably the most beautiful palm grove in all Europe extends to the water's edge and a superb sandy beach. The image of Vaï is famous, and all those who have inquired about Crete before coming here have heard about it. Apart from the beach, its car park and a few tavernas, Vaï is deserted, there are no hotels or campsites in the vicinity. Plan to bring some supplies if you want to spend the day there even if there is a tavern on the beach and another one a few minutes before you get there. The village of Palekastro, 8 kilometres away, is a pleasant place to sleep.
