Located about fifteen kilometers west of Ierapetra, Myrtos has been able to resist until now the sirens of organized tourist development. Even in the height of summer, there is still space. The 600 inhabitants of this charming little white village maintain their environment in an impeccable state. They continue to live mainly from agriculture and fishing. The freshly whitewashed and flowered houses, the small streets that lead down to the sea front where a shaded passageway runs along the pebble beach with its row of kafeneia and tavernas, feet in the water: all this gives an intimate impression, with a really relaxing atmosphere. The overnight traveler may well find himself staying much longer than expected... Extending the night in one of the seaside cafes or taverns, listening to music and sharing a drink, or lying on the nearby beach meditating under the starry sky are some of the activities that await you. Sometimes Cretan music concerts are held on the beach in the summer: look out for the posters. All the animation of Myrtos is organized around the beach and the sea front where small terraces of restaurants are linked. The pebble beach is small, but in the vicinity there are other more pleasant beaches. Just before arriving in the village from Ierapetra, two important archaeological sites offer an exciting visit. Please note: there are bus connections to Ierapetra every 30 minutes or so during the season.
