Continuing the road that passes through Knossos, south of Heraklion, we arrive, after about fifteen kilometres, at Archanes. This prosperous and lively town is situated in the middle of a basin where the main activity is the production of excellent wines. This basin is overhung by Mount Giouchas. It is divided in two: Kato Archanes (Archanes of the bottom) and Pano Archanes (Archanes of the top). The site of Pano Archanes was already prosperous during the Minoan period. A good half-day is necessary to go around the remains. From there, you can visit the small ancient town of Vathipetro located 4 km away. A public festival (August 6th) takes place every year at the top of Mount Giouchas, which dominates the valley.
