Masua is watched over by the imposing Pan di Zucchero ("sugar loaf") reef, which is very popular with free climbers. The village is mainly home to the old mine of Porto Flavia. This one is famous for its 600-metre long gallery dug into the limestone cliff. It was also a masterpiece of engineering with a novel system for loading ships with the precious zinc and lead ores. The ores flowed through a system of silos suspended along the cliff. Visitors who are not afraid of heights will be moved by the contrast between the dark world of the mine and the intense blue of the sea.
