In the 19th century, under the direction of Herman Bollé, the famous Austrian architect who embellished Zagreb, a larger basilica was built around the church of St. Mary of the Snows (Sv. Marija Snježna). The basilica was enlarged with a network of arcades for the reception of the believers, protected from the rain, and for their orderly walk. Every year, between April and October, especially at Easter, more than 500,000 pilgrims converge on this high place of Balkan Christianity. For information on accommodation in the area, restaurants, transportation, etc., go to the tourist office on Trg Pape Ivana Pavla square.
