An hour's drive north of Zagreb, via the E59 or D205, Klanjec is a charming little mountain village that was home to a community of Franciscan monks in the 17th century. The monastery where these monks resided is the Franjevacki Smostan; it can be visited today. Klanjec is also famous for being the birthplace of the sculptor Antun Augustinčić (1900-1979), a disciple of the master statuary Meštrović, the latter being considered one of the major Croatian sculptors of the 20th century. Among other important works, he is credited with the remarkable Peace Monument in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York.
