The small town of Lepoglava is known for its Pauline monastery (Pavlinski samostan), its embroiderers' handicraft event, which takes place every year at the end of September, but also for having housed a detention center, one of the best guarded in the country, where the most dangerous criminals were imprisoned. The Lepoglava monastery still looks good today with its well-maintained facade and baroque decor, but its influence is no longer as strong as it was in the 17th and 18th centuries when it housed one of the country's largest universities. Lepoglava is worth a short visit, but it is not a place to stay.
