The small town of Pöllau is a very fine architectural ensemble. The 12th-century castle, once surrounded by a moat, became a convent in the early 16th century. It was then remodelled in the Baroque style, of which the admirable frescoes in the old refectory are a fine example. Today the castle is an important cultural centre. You can also visit the imposing abbey church from the early 18th century with its rich interior, and then explore the charming Marktplatz and the neighbouring alleys. The entrance to the monastery castle is on the square. Pöllau has a very pleasant youth hostel.
