In ancient Greek times, the city was already a major Illyrian port. Raised to the rank of colony by Julius Caesar, the ancient Salona became the main Roman city in the region. Trade with Rome increased. From the 4th century AD, Salona became a religious center with numerous basilicas. Its various remains bear witness to its historical importance. Allow a full day to visit the large archaeological site (the city walls with their towers and gates, the forum and its temples, the amphitheater, the cemetery where the martyrs, Manastirine, Kapljuč and Marusinac are buried) and stroll down to the Jadro river.
