Archaeological digs have confirmed the colonizing presence of ancient Rome in the region. In the Middle Ages, the town became the administrative center. From the 7th century onwards, Christianity took hold with the Franks. In 1345, Bosnian Franciscans built the convent of Sainte-Marie. In the 16th century, the city was occupied by the Ottoman army until 1715. Even today, in summer, to commemorate this liberation, tournaments of chivalry, classified by Unesco as tangible and intangible cultural heritage, are held in the Kamiak fortress, a stronghold that can be visited at the same time as the Alka Museum.
