Andoany (or Hell-Ville) is Nosy Be's main town. In fact, when someone says they're going "to town", that's where they're going. To do their shopping, negotiate with a banker, or try to change money or withdraw some... Leaving the harbor, where the comings and goings of cargo ships, dhows and pleasure boats offer a lively spectacle, we walk up the Avenue de la Libération, a long tree-lined esplanade bordered by the Rue Passot and Rue Fardoux. Buildings with colonnades and verandas from the colonial period have retained all their charm. The esplanade is dotted with cannons dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, a reminder of the battles fought for control of the island. At the end of the esplanade, facing the bay, stands the monument to Russian soldiers. On the way up to the town center, past the post office, you pass several shopping streets, with bars, restaurants, banks, police station, pharmacies and various tourist services. A colorful market is held here every day. Early in the morning, it's a pleasant festival of colors and smells.
