Although the beaches here are more difficult to access, the road east from Andoany can be a day trip. The ghost town of Ambanoro is close to Marodokana. A tangle of lianas and ficus banyan trunks encircles buildings washed away by the waters. A stroll through the narrow streets leads to the impressively silent grand mosque. Ambanoro is the island's oldest settlement. Its abandonment remains a mystery. From the 16th to the 19th century, the Antalaotra seafarers traded with the Comoros, India and Africa. The Muslim cemetery, hidden in the greenery, is home to tombs decorated with suras.
