Bathed by numerous springs, the capital of Hiiumaa, Kärdla, is a small town rich in parks, trees and hedges of all kinds. To the south of the town lies a 4 km-wide crater carved out by a falling meteor 455 million years ago. In the center of the crater, a hole 815.2 m deep has been drilled. Between 1985 and 1989, mineral water from the water table beneath the crater was bottled. The fruit of speculation in 1840, it was not until shortly after independence that the theory of a meteor having deformed the geological structure at this location was verified in 1992.
