While Tallinn is the economic and administrative heart of the country, Tartu is the soul of the nation. It is known as a university center (the region's first university was founded here by the Swedes in 1632), as well as a cultural and historical center. At the end of the 19thcentury , it became the cradle of the national and independence revival, which is why it occupies such a special place in the hearts of Estonians. Today, Tartu is considered the city of youth, artists and poets.Since independence, the city has undergone constant change. As a university town, it attracts not only young Estonians, but also students from all over the world.
