This is Estonia's largest lake, forming a natural border with Russia. The northern shore boasts numerous sandy beaches. Several picturesque villages line the lake, the most interesting of which are Kauksi, Mustvee and Kallaste. In summer, the lake is ideal for swimming. In winter, it's sometimes possible to walk on the ice when it's thick enough. This is also when you can see fishermen in action, breaking through the ice and casting their lines in the hope of getting a bite. This practice can be dangerous for the inexperienced, and it's possible to try it with someone.
