A real favourite. If there was only one private game reserve to choose from around Grahamstown, it would be Pumba, the name of the warthog in Swahili in The Lion King. This small 6,000 hectare reserve has two luxury lodges, but is not just for the wealthy: it offers day game drives for non-guestswho may be lucky enough to spot a white lion. This very rare species that once existed in the wild in Timbavati near the Kruger has completely disappeared from the bush, but still existed in zoos and enclosures. It is now reintroduced in the wild in a few rare places. Beautiful! Pumba is also one of the only reserves on the coast that can offer the symphony of lions and waterfowl, as here a lake adds to the charm of the bush. Under a cloudless sky, the spectacle of tranquil waters lined with tall grasses and the backdrop of straw-coloured wild hills make for an absolutely stunning landscape. Go in search of large mammals, as the white lion coexists with other lions, all the Big Five and the usual bush animals and over 250 species of birds. Rhinos remain threatened by poaching for their horns.
