Valmiera lies at the end of the Gauja park. First mentioned in 1323, it grew up around the castle of the Livonian order and became a member of the Hanseatic League. It was destroyed and rebuilt no less than eleven times, the last during the Second World War. The historic district lies between the Gauja and its tributary, the Azkalna. Don't hesitate to climb to the top of the tower of St. Simeon's Lutheran Church, which offers a magnificent view of the region. Afterwards, admire the ruins of the Order's castle(Pilsdrupas) and, for its sculptures, head for the park by Lake Dzirnavu.
